NAVUSO AGRICULTURAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE WELCOMES MINISTERIAL VISIT

August 12, 2025

The Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute (NATI) proudly welcomed the Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, and the Honourable Inosi Kuridrani, Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, during their official visit yesterday afternoon.

Hon. Tunabuna described the occasion as a significant opportunity for collaboration, with both leaders engaging closely with NATI’s dedicated team to explore the latest advancements in agricultural education and sustainable practices.

“Through this dialogue, we aim to build partnerships that will enhance our collective knowledge and drive meaningful change in both the community and the industry as a whole,” Hon. Tunabuna said.

The Ministers toured key facilities, including the Bamford Student Farmers Scheme—which has recently harvested its ginger crop—the Adult Training Centre, and the newly laid foundation for NATI’s upcoming Administration Block.

Mr. Uraia Waibuta, Head of School, reaffirmed NATI’s commitment to promoting innovative, environmentally friendly solutions to address pressing challenges within Fiji’s agriculture sector.

He highlighted the country’s current social and economic issues, including rising crime, drug and violence prevalence, rural-to-urban migration, and an aging farming population.

“We believe we have part of the solution to address these pressing issues among Fiji’s youth,” Mr. Waibuta stated.

Central to NATI’s efforts is the Bamford Students Farmers Scheme, a program designed to train rural youth within a structured three-year cropping cycle. By the end of the program, participants are expected to achieve savings of approximately $30,000, enabling them to transition into sustainable farming ventures.

The initiative recruits young people from towns, villages, and informal settlements across Fiji, equipping them with modern farming skills, accredited qualifications, and—most critically—access to land after graduation. Graduates return to their communities empowered to apply their skills, contribute to food security, and better livelihoods.

“They return to their communities equipped to drive sustainable agricultural development and foster economic growth,” Mr. Waibuta said.

Hon. Kuridrani commended NATI for its unwavering dedication to creating meaningful opportunities for young Fijians. He also expressed special appreciation for the Bamford Students Farmers Scheme and its transformative impact on participants.

“You possess greater capabilities than those in the village, as evidenced by the achievements you have attained today,” Hon. Kuridrani remarked.

After the official visit, discussions were carried out on how best to strengthen partnerships, address existing challenges, and implement practical solutions for further sustainable development.
