Fiji’s agricultural sector is poised for a bold transformation following the successful conclusion of the two-day Agriculture Mini-Trade Forum at the Sofitel Resort in Nadi.
In her official closing remarks, the Minister for Fisheries and Forests and Acting Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Alitia Bainivalu, underscored the need for a smarter, greener, and market-focused approach to agriculture.
“This forum has reaffirmed that agriculture is not only the backbone of our economy—it is the bridge to our trade future,” Hon. Bainivalu said.
Held under the theme “Bridging Markets and Bridging Futures,” the forum brought together farmers, exporters, government representatives, and trade partners—particularly from New Zealand—to explore opportunities for enhancing trade and agricultural cooperation.
Hon. Bainivalu highlighted
five key priorities that emerged from the forum:
Transformation with
Purpose – A shift from a product-driven mindset to a market-led approach, where
farmers are guided by consumer demand rather than volume alone.
A Market-Driven
Vision – The Ministry’s 2024–2028 Strategic Plan aims to build a resilient,
inclusive, and competitive agricultural sector, aligned with tourism and export
market needs.
Whole-of-Society
Coordination – Stronger collaboration between government ministries, the
private sector, and farmer clusters to strengthen value chains and unlock new
markets.
Empowering Farmers
and Communities – Focused support for women, youth, and smallholder farmers to
ensure inclusivity and equitable access to resources.
Climate Resilience
and Sustainability – Investment in climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land
and water use, and disaster preparedness to safeguard the future of farming.
Hon. Bainivalu acknowledged the growing partnership between Fiji and New Zealand, noting the launch of the Fiji Trade Hub as a major milestone.
The Hub is expected to:
Improve the export
readiness of Fijian produce,
Enhance logistics and
reduce trade barriers,
Increase private sector
participation.
“This partnership is not just about trading goods—it’s about building resilient food systems and shared prosperity,” Hon. Bainivalu stated.
The Forum reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to its mission:
“To create an enabling environment that fosters economic opportunity, strengthens climate resilience, ensures food security, and promotes sustainability for all Fijians.”
Hon. Bainivalu concluded with
a powerful vision:
“A Fiji where our farmers are not just producers, but entrepreneurs. Where our exports become brands. Where our agriculture is not just a sector, but a driver of national prosperity.”
The Ministry extends its gratitude to all participants, trade partners, and stakeholders who contributed to the success of the Forum and looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing Fiji’s agricultural future.
