The construction of the Qalinibulu Dam under the Water Shed Management Program is now 50% complete, marking the Waterways Division’s commitment to enhancing water security and climate resilience for communities in Ba.
The $2 million project is designed to provide long-term benefits for agriculture, flood mitigation, and sustainable water access.
The Hon. Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, visited the site yesterday to inspect the progress and meet with the engineers.
He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of the work, noting the dam’s vital role in supporting both livelihoods and the environment.
“This dam is more than just infrastructure; it’s an investment in the future of our farmers, our families, and our communities,” said Hon. Tunabuna.
“Once completed, the Qalinibulu Dam will not only regulate water flow and reduce flood risks, but also ensure a reliable water supply for both agricultural activities and surrounding communities, supporting daily needs, household use, and local livelihoods.”
It’s a key part of our strategy to build resilience against climate change and support sustainable development in Ba.”
The Qalinibulu Dam will serve as a critical water retention structure, capturing runoff during heavy rains and releasing it gradually to support irrigation and groundwater recharge. This will help reduce soil erosion, improve crop yields, and protect downstream communities from flash flooding.
The Waterways Division continues to work closely with landowners and communities to ensure the project is delivered with transparency and long-term impact.
Hon. Tunabuna reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to delivering practical solutions that empower rural communities.
“We are building with purpose, every dam, every channel, every watershed project is designed to serve the people, not only those who rely directly on land and water for their daily lives, but also those whose well-being, safety, and future depend on sustainable and resilient communities.”
Multi Works has been contracted to carry out the construction of the Qalinibulu Dam.
The Qalinibulu Dam is expected to be completed later this year, with ongoing monitoring and community engagement to ensure its success.
