ASSISTANT MINISTER VISITS FLOODGATES AND NATURE-BASED SEAWALL PROJECTS IN BA

July 23, 2025

The Honourable Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna visited key infrastructure sites in Ba, including the floodgates that are currently undergoing maintenance and the nature-based seawall at Navolau No. 1.

The visit underscored the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience and protecting vulnerable communities from the impacts of flooding and coastal erosion.

Maintenance works on the floodgates are essential to ensuring their continued effectiveness in managing water flow, preventing saltwater intrusion, and safeguarding agricultural lands and settlements.

At Navolau No. 1, Hon. Tunabuna inspected the nature-based seawall, a sustainable solution that uses vegetation and natural materials to buffer wave energy and reduce shoreline degradation.

The seawall not only protects homes and infrastructure but also supports biodiversity and enhances the coastal environment.

“These projects reflect our dedication to building resilient communities through practical and sustainable solutions,” said Hon. Tunabuna.

“Proper maintenance and nature-based approaches are key to protecting lives, livelihoods, and the environment.”

The Ministry continues to prioritize infrastructure that serves both people and nature, ensuring long-term protection and prosperity for Fijian communities.
