Honourable Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, met with Honourable Dr. Shane Reti, New Zealand’s Minister for Pacific Peoples, Science, Innovation and Technology, Statistics and University, during the 2025 PAPGREN Biennial Meeting held at the Novotel Resort in Nadi.
The bilateral meeting served as an opportunity to reinforce the growing partnership between Fiji and New Zealand in areas critical to agricultural advancement, environmental sustainability, and rural development.
Hon. Dr. Reti conveyed his Ministry’s unwavering readiness to support Fiji, noting the shared commitment to collaborative action in key sectors.
In a cordial and forward-looking exchange, the Ministers discussed the value of introducing micro-credentials to upskill Fiji’s research officers, an initiative aimed at addressing qualification gaps and fostering expertise through flexible, targeted training.
They also explored the potential of a research officer exchange program to strengthen professional networks and drive innovation across Ministries.
Further dialogue focused on revitalizing Fiji’s sugar sector through the infusion of science-led strategies, as well as the development of a national policy to repurpose hotel kitchen waste from the tourism industry, with an emphasis on sustainability and resource efficiency.
Livestock nutrition and genetic improvement were also identified as priority areas, with a mutual interest in launching collaborative research initiatives to benefit farmers and improve animal health.
Importantly, both Ministers recognized the potential of agro-tourism as a dynamic bridge between agriculture and sustainable tourism.
Hon. Assistant Minister Tunabuna expressed great appreciation for the constructive engagement and welcomed New Zealand’s support in operationalizing joint efforts.
The meeting concluded with both parties affirming their intention to develop programs, formalize partnerships, and continue dialogue through dedicated channels.
This engagement marks a meaningful step in strengthening Pacific agricultural ties, with both Ministries committed to working together to empower rural communities through innovation, capacity-building, and sustainable development.
