PROGRESS UPDATE: NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS PROJECT BOOSTS COASTAL RESILIENCE IN NAVOLAU AND SOMOSOMO VILLAGES

July 20, 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways (MoAW) is pleased to provide an update on the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) project underway at Navolau Village No.1 in Rakiraki, Ra, and Somosomo Village in Taveuni.

Launched on November 6, 2024, the project forms part of the regional KIWA Initiative, funded through IUCN Oceania, and reflects the Ministry's continued commitment to coastal protection and community resilience.

Significant progress has been achieved as the Ministry has successfully completed 100% of the NBS seawall construction at Navolau Village, while 80% of the rock revetment works have been finalized at Somosomo Village.

These engineered natural infrastructure designs, built using locally sourced materials, play a vital role in reducing coastal erosion and protecting vulnerable communities from climate-induced hazards.

The update reflects commitments to implementing climate-smart infrastructure that strengthens vulnerable communities acknowledging the generous support of the KIWA Initiatives and IUCN Oceania.

The NBS project is part of Fiji’s wider efforts to integrate environmentally sustainable practices into infrastructure development. By aligning traditional knowledge with scientific expertise, the initiative demonstrates how nature-based approaches can offer effective, long-lasting resilience to climate risks such as sea-level rise and storm surges.

The Ministry extends its sincere thanks to the people of Navolau and Somosomo for their continued support, cooperation, and patience throughout the implementation phase.

Their partnership has been essential to advancing solutions that safeguard livelihoods, cultural heritage, and natural ecosystems.

The Ministry remains dedicated to finalizing the project in the near future and will continue to work closely with local communities and development partners to deliver sustainable outcomes.
