The Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Fiji’s agriculture sector, underscoring the importance of dedication and collaboration from all stakeholders.
Hon. Tunabuna said that the growth of the agriculture sector relies on the sustained efforts of farmers, agribusinesses, industry partners, and government agencies working together to implement innovative practices, improve productivity, and strengthen food security.
He further emphasized that a resilient and modern agriculture sector is vital for Fiji’s economic growth, rural livelihoods, and climate resilience, adding that the Ministry will continue to support initiatives that empower farmers and promote sustainable farming systems.
“Agriculture is more than just a source of food—it is the backbone of our communities and a key driver of our economy. If we remain committed, innovative, and united in our vision, we can build a sector that is stronger, more sustainable, and more prosperous for future generations,” Hon. Tunabuna said.
He also acknowledged the dedication of his team, noting the various expertise within the ranks of the Ministry that have thrived in their work over the past years.
“I am privileged to lead a dedicated team that will work hard towards the empowerment of farmers across Fiji.”
Reflecting on past challenges, he added that in the past years, work was often hindered by limited funding.
“Now, through great vision and support, we are slowly securing the resources needed to aid and assist us in delivering tangible results for our farmers.”
He also thanked the strong partnerships with line ministries, especially the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, and the Ministry of Health.
“There are programs in place that have enabled us to work together, especially in assisting our farmers and processors. I believe that moving forward, our relations will continue to strengthen as we align our efforts towards sustainable agricultural growth and improved livelihoods for our people,” Hon. Tunabuna said.
Hon. Tunabuna added that the Ministry will continue to engage in dialogues with trading partners and explore new markets for locally grown produce, ensuring that Fiji’s agricultural products gain wider recognition and reach.
He emphasized that expanding market opportunities will not only boost farmers’ incomes but also strengthen the country’s position in the regional and global agricultural trade.
He called on farmers and
stakeholders to work closely with the Ministry and assist in efforts to
modernize the sector, adopt climate-smart practices, and increase production to
meet both local and export demands.
Hon. Tunabuna stressed that collective action and shared responsibility are key to unlocking the full potential of Fiji’s agriculture industry.
